Research - THCV lowers blood sugar diabetes type 2
A recent study found unique results regarding the treatment of diabetes
type 2. In the UK, they proved that the relatively unknown cannabinoid THCV
could play an important role in the treatment of the form of diabetes. That
cannabis may help in the treatment of diabetes was already known. But this
study shows that there is still much to discover about the efficacy of cannabis
in various diseases.
Diabetes
More
than 29 million people in US have diabetes, of which nine out of ten have diabetes
type 2. In this form of diabetes the body has too little insulin and reacts
(often) not on insulin. Therefore, patients usually get medications,
nutrition and exercise advice and in some cases extra insulin. Previously,
type 2 diabetes was known as adult-onset diabetes.
Cannabis in diabetes
That
diabetes patients could benefit is not news to cannabis. Earlier we shared
all five benefits of cannabis in the disease. It can lower
insulin resistance and, inter alia, kidney damage due to help prevent
diabetes. It is also known that cannabis use may help prevent diabetes
altogether. This is partly because marijuana users tend to have a lower
BMI than non-cannabis users.
New research
Older studies
mainly focused on the better-known cannabinoids (the active substances in
cannabis) THC and CBD . That
obviously has to do with the popularity of these cannabinoids in the current
medicinal cannabis products. But
recently it was shown that no THC and CBD, THCV but sometimes could play a
major role in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
In the UK,
please note was clinically
studied for two types of
treatments for diabetes type 2. 62 non insulin dependent patients were followed
for a period of 13 weeks. They
were given at that time twice daily placebo, CBD or THCV either CBD and THCV. So two groups received only CBD or
THCV alone, one group received a combination of the two cannabinoids and one
group received a fake medication for control.
Positive
results
The results of
the study are without mentioning positive. According
to the scientists administering THCV has a positive effect on the glycemic index in the body. That is the benchmark for the impact
that food on your blood glucose (blood sugar).
The authors of
the study noted that the administration of THCV alone the fasting blood sugar
decreases significantly and the pancreas is functioning better. According to researchers these results
are unique as other treatments have no noticeable effect on the metabolism. Finally, to conclude the scientists
found that THCV could be a new component in the treatment of patients with type
2 diabetes.
